چکیده

Energy efficiency is one of the most important criteria in the design of a wireless sensor network. Sensor nodes are usually batterypowered and thus have very limited lifetime. In this paper, we introduce a novel passive wake-up radio device named WISP-Mote that uses a passive RFID tag as a wake-up receiver for a traditional sensor node. We characterize the WISP-Mote with field tests in different operating environments and present the wake-up probabilities based on the distance between the wake-up transmitter and receiver. We then perform simulations to compare the performance of a network with WISP-Motes and with duty-cycling of the sensor nodes, using the wake-up probabilities measured in our field tests. Additionally, potential applications that can benefit from WISP-Motes are discussed, and the advantages of using WISP-Motes are identified by simulation results based on these application scenarios. Results show that the wake-up radio sensor networks have great potential over duty-cycling approaches for energy efficiency, while providing similar latency and packet delivery performances.

Duty-Cycle-Aware Minimum Energy Multicasting of Passive RFID Wake-up Radios for Wireless Sensor Networks

In duty-cycled wireless sensor networks, the nodes switch between active and dormant states, and each node determine its active/dormant schedule independently. This complicates the Minimum Energy Multicasting (MEM) problem in wireless sensor networks both for one-to-many multicasting and for all-to-all multicasting. In the case of one-to-many multicasting, we present a formalization of the Mini...

Acoustic Wake-Up Receivers for Home Automation Control Applications

Automated home applications are to ease the use of technology and devices around the house. Most of the electronic devices, like shutters or entertainment products (Hifi, TV and even WiFi), are constantly in a standby mode, where they consume a considerable amount of energy. The standby mode is necessary to react to commands triggered by the user, but the time the device spends in a standby mod...

Improving the Throughput of Sensor Network Wake-Up Radios using Block Orthogonal Codes

We propose the use of a block orthogonal code to reduce the symbol error rate, and therefore improve the throughput, of wake-up radios used in sensor networks. Currently proposed wake-up radios that use, for example, on-off keying modulation focus on integrated circuit design for low power operation. However, they do not take error correction coding into account and therefore increase the error...

WaCo: A Wake-Up Radio COOJA Extension for Simulating Ultra Low Power Radios

Radio communication remains the primary battery consuming activity in wireless systems. Advances in MAC protocols have enabled significant lifetime improvements, but in systems with low data rate, idle listening, and other communication artifacts can begin to dominate costs. One proposal to combat this is the addition of a second, extremely low power radio component that is always-on. As a cons...
